Sanne van Tongeren
Sanne van Tongeren is a sculptor and a scholar of ancient Greek and Latin. She held a teaching position at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy. In 2018 she started her own school in Amsterdam: Figura, Dutch Academy of Figurative Sculpture. Though her work enters into dialogue with the old masters, her sculptures are contemporary. Humans and the human body are a source of inspiration to her, and the human body and human movement form an integral part of both her illustrations and her sculptures. ‘My fascination with human motion is closely entwined with my fascination for music and dance; and because I cannot dance, I sculpt. Her figures and portraits emanate strength, but also quietude: ‘Sculpture is not photography. Portraits don’t portray a moment captured, but are rather a visualisation of time. And you might say my figures contain a restrained dynamic: the start of motion is always my point of departure.’

“Onze studenten zijn tekenaars en beeldhouwers die hun vakmanschap willen ontwikkelen. Ze stellen de vragen die ik mij stelde toen ik jaren geleden op zoek was naar een beeldhouwopleiding.
• Hoe haal ik het uiterste uit een lichaamshouding?
• Hoe houd ik een portret levendig en geef ik het karakter?
• Hoe kan ik mijn oog en mijn visuele geheugen trainen?
De intensieve tweejarige opleiding Sculpture biedt een lesprogramma waarin vakmanschap, observatie en methodiek centraal staan. We werken hoofdzakelijk naar levend model. Studenten krijgen les van klassiek opgeleide beeldhouwers, tekenaars en kunsthistorici. Hun docenten zijn afgestudeerd aan gerenommeerde klassieke academies voor realistische figuratieve beeldende kunst. Bij Figura ligt het accent op het ambacht: kwaliteit boven kwantiteit en vakmanschap als basis voor kunstenaarschap. We zijn klassiek én eigentijds.”
