Following the first Casting a Shadow Wherever We Stand that took place last year, the second instalment of the exhibition continues to engage in the concept of the body both as physical and social means. While acknowledging the experience of the body as something individual, the exhibition pays attention to the significance of the physical body and its agency in relation to the kind of role it plays in one’s social experience and identity.
This exhibition presents works by four Amsterdam-based artists: Hee-Seung Choi, Josje Peters, Artémise Ploegaerts and Maia Elisabeth Sørensen. Their different approaches to the subject is manifested in various forms including video, painting, installation and performance. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of public programs such as dance film lab and film screening.
The exhibition is supported by AFK.

About the artists
Hee-Seung Choi (US/NL) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. Initially trained as a classical musician, she continued her study at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (NL) after receiving her master’s degree in music composition from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University (US). She draws her inspiration from familiar signs, routines and arrangements found in everyday life. Her work has been shown at venues such as De Balie (NL), P/////AKT gallery (NL), De Nederlandsche Bank (NL), Korzo Theater (NL), Frascati theater (NL), La Fleche D’or (FR) and International Thermaikos Film Festival (GR). She has been a resident artist at Steim(NL) and Kunsthuis SYB (NL).

Josje Peters (NL/CA) is a visual artist mainly working within the field of painting. In her work she researches a state of being in which figures and spaces seem to lose their identity. She completed her bachelor in fine arts at AKV St Joost in ‘s Hertogenbosch in 2008. In 2010 and 2011 she was a resident at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.She is also a recipient of the Buning Brongersprijs (2012), Startstipend by Mondriaan fonds (2012/2013) and AFK (2018/2019). Her work has been exhibited in venues such as Museum Waterland (NL), Pictura (NL), De Nederlansche bank (NL), Arti et amicitiae(NL), The Kitchen (CA) and the Rijksakademie Open (NL).
Artémise Ploegaerts (FR/NL) is a choreographer working with different media such as dance performance, video, and archival material. Video editing is for her a way to choreograph. She started her dance training at the conservatoire in Lille and continued her studies in Paris. She then completed a Bachelor Dance Theatre at TrinityLaban, London in 2011. In 2012, she began her Master of choreography at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, the Netherlands where she started to combine her practice with video. She has been recently researching on the ways with which mass culture infiltrates the female body.
Her work has been shown in institutions such as the Stedelijk museum Amsterdam, VanAbbe museum Eindhoven, Dansmakers Amsterdam, Veem Theatre and BAU, Dance Base Edinburgh, De Lindenberg, Dreamspace Gallery London, Laban Centre, Cinedans, C.A.F.A Beijing, … She has participated in art and dance residencies in Europe and China.

Maia Elisabeth Sørensen (DK/NL) is a dance filmmaker with a background in dance and choreography. In 2007 Maia graduated from Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance (NY) with focus on choreography. Her graduation work was her first dance film NUDE, for which she received the cultural grant from American Scandinavian Society. Since, she has specialised in dance film as a maker, teacher and curator. Her work always evolves around movement, either as narrative storytelling, choreography or subject matter.
Maia’s work has been screened and exhibited in numerous festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America and she was awarded the ‘New Creator/Innovation prize’ in 2014 at the international dance film competition IDILL, ‘Best Experiment’ at Ekko Shortlist Awards 2014 t. Her debut documentary “Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing” won the audience award for best documentary at Cinedans Dance on Screen Festival in 2018.
