Gitte Nygaard

Gitte Nygaard is a jewelery artist with a difference, a maker passionate about how her work can inspire change and create connection in this mad, mad world.

Gitte works across disciplines to expand conversations and inspire awareness of the relationship between ourselves and the objects we live with.

Her work moves beyond the gallery, connects the seemingly unexpected and explores the often overlooked.

She creates artworks, functional objects, collections, commissioned pieces and project based collaborations.

Gitte graduated in 1998 as a goldsmith from the Danish College of Jewelery and Silversmithing, and in 2002 in Art Jewelery from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. But her methods expand far beyond her extensive academic training.

While Nygaard’s range of work is broad and multi-faceted, connecting the strands is the idea of how jewelery and products create relations to people and between people.

In 2009 Gitte was nominated for the ‘Rotterdam Designprijs’ together with Jair Straschnow for their project for street children in Durban, South Africa. In 2012 she was nominated for ‘DOEN Materiaalprijs’ and in 2013 she was the winner of ‘Design and Craft Biennale 2013’ in Copenhagen for the collaboration project Makers Move together with Josephine Winther. In 2017 she was nominated for ‘Made for Maastricht’ together with Jair Straschnow.
